Children of Wacko Religious Parents

You probably know one or two people that you would say hold “weird” or “crazy” beliefs. But what happens to children raised in a messed up Christian home or a wacko religious environment? They often turn to atheism. Billed as “the largest gathering of the secular movement in world history,” the Reason Rally featured speaker Nate Phelps. His name as an out-spoken atheist isn’t as well known as someone like Dawkins. But his father is certainly known by many. You see, Nate Phelps is the son of Westboro Baptist Church Pastor Fred Phelps. Westboro Baptist Church is the group responsible for anti-gay and anti-military protests. You’ve probably seen them holding signs that say “Pray For More Dead Soldiers” or “God Hates Fags.”

Nate Phelps recently did an interview with the L.A. Times about his upbringing and how he came to his beliefs today. I recommend every parent read this article. It gives a really good idea about the formation of thoughts in the mind of a son or daughter.

Q&A: Notorious pastors atheist son speaks out at Reason Rally.

I’m not saying that every child of Christian parents who chooses atheism was victimized by sick beliefs (I’m not saying the Westboro Baptist Church people are even Christians). I’m just pointing out that if you put wacked out ideas into a child’s head, it shouldn’t be any surprise how he or she turns out. If you put wacked out religious ideas into a child’s head, it shouldn’t be any surprise what he or she comes to believe about God.
