In some Christian circles I’ve been in, music is a very controversial subject. There are those who like modern praise and worship and those who are adamantly opposed to it. If you’ve read The Renewed Mind for any length of time, you know that my tastes pretty much span the gamut. I like most types and styles of music with a few exceptions. But lately, I found myself a little jaded on the shallowness of Christian music. Some of it started to sound the same and there didn’t seem to be any depth. But something happened recently that is causing me to think a little differently. This song by David Crowder is the one that actually started my change of heart.
On the surface, there isn’t really much to “Glory Of It All.” Musically, it’s pretty simple and repetitive. The words aren’t deep or poetic. I like David Crowder’s music overall but to be honest, this song wasn’t on my list of top choices. I never even considered putting it on my playlist.
But then I heard this song in a certain situation, in a certain worship setting, with my heart in a certain place. It was if I heard it for the first time. The song became personal. I think that is the key to a lot of music – for better or worse. Aren’t there times in your life when the old hymn “It Is Well With My Soul” means more to you than other times? Or when you hear Casting Crowns’ “Praise You In This Storm” and you find yourself singing and identifying with the lyrics?
I’m still kind of skeptical about a lot of the music being produced. But I’m also leaving the door open that the Lord can use His people to minister to me personally when I need it. It doesn’t mean I think all Christian music is good. It doesn’t mean that I’ve changed my mind about the shallowness of some of the songs out there. But it does leave a little more room in my heart to allow for the Lord to encourage and draw my heart closer through some music if I let it. You may not like this song or even see the point in it. That’s okay. Regardless, I hope today you find the right spiritual song, hymn or Psalm that will be a balm in your needs.
