Six Reasons Young Christians Leave Church – New Barna Study

This caught my attention.  The reasons given in this article are in line with much of what I’ve seen in recent years. Don’t get me wrong – I don’t agree all of these reasons are actually true. But I believe the perceptions of the young Christians in this article really are the perceptions of young Christians.

I think there is a balance that needs to be struck in our churches. We must not compromise the message. We must not water-down the gospel (otherwise there won’t be young Christians, right?). We must not make sin or sinful lifestyles acceptable. However…

We should be concerned when Christianity is perceived as a “country club only for insiders” or the church “ignores the problems of the real world.” There are things that we can and should change to ensure that not only young Christians but lost people see only Christ, not the walls we put up around our churches.

I think the bottom line is we need to listen carefully and distinguish what is the opinion of the spiritually immature vs. what is the perception of a fresh set of eyes.
